Planning plays a vital role in the environmental, social and economic quality of life of the British Isles. Used positively and creatively, planning produces and protects places of outstanding quality and brings lasting benefits for all those who live in them. Its practitioners can and should be proud of their contribution to these outcomes and the processes that lead to them.

Every year since 1978, the Royal Town Planning Institute's Awards for outstanding group achievement in town and country planning have celebrated the planning profession's contribution to the quality of life throughout the British Isles and Ireland.

These three awards recognise the diversity of planning achievement amongst different sectors of the planning profession. The Planning Consultancy award seeks to identify exemplary practice that meets the requirements of clients and the wider community and carries weight within the profession at large. The Young Planner of the Year Award is intended to seek out and acclaim the brightest younger planners involved in the profession and this year we have introduced a new award to recognise excellence in teaching and learning in planning education.
