English Heritage

English Heritage is the Government’s lead advisory body for the historic environment. Each year we advise on 16,000 consent applications, invest £30m in securing the future of historic places, open 400 properties to the public, undertake research and maintain the Historic Monuments Record. Our approach is flexible, well-informed and based on helping everyone to understand and value the historic environment.

Landmark Chambers

Landmark Chambers is comprised of 64 barristers who specialise in environmental, planning, property and public law.  Of those 64, 18 are QCs.   A number of our members of chambers sit as Deputy High Court Judges and Recorders.  In our list of junior tenants 11 are members of the Attorney General's panels of Treasury counsel; 3 are A panel, 5 are B panel and 3 are C panel.  Many senior members are former junior Treasury counsel.

National Grid

National Grid owns and operates the high voltage electricity transmission system in England and Wales and we operate the Scottish high voltage transmission system. We also own and operate the gas transmission system throughout Great Britain and we distribute gas in the heart of England, to approximately 11 million offices, factories, schools and homes. Our position at the heart of the UK’s energy infrastructure gives us insight into the challenge that climate change brings to the energy industry.

We work closely with, and support, the Government in meeting its climate change objectives. National Grid also supports the Climate Change Bill which sets long term policy goals and provides a clear framework in which business can work.

Climate change is possibly one of the greatest change challenges facing society in the 21st century.

Meeting renewables targets will require a change in the locations from which electricity is generated and transported. In areas where renewables, especially wind are most abundant, such as the highlands of Scotland, the electricity transmission network either does not exist, or has been built to serve small amounts of generation.

National Grid estimates that in order to reinforce the onshore transmission network across Great Britain to accommodate the UK target of 15% of all energy from renewables (40% electricity from renewables) by 2020, £3.5bn of capital investment will be required. More investment will be needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change.

In order to make this investment, particularly in areas where the transmission system does not currently exist, National Grid will have considerable interface with local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that together we achieve an energy network for the future.

Planning Advisory Service

The Planning Advisory Service helps the planning sector build on its success. We encourage continuous improvement and promote a culture of self-sustaining change and learning. PAS is part of the Improvement and Development Agency The IDeA works for  local government improvement so councils can serve people and places  better. The Advisory Team for Large Applications  is also part of PAS. ATLAS offers direct support to individual local authorities that are delivering key government objectives such as large-scale housing developments. PAS works in partnership with all local authorities and others involved in delivering outcomes through the planning system to enhance performance and accelerate the speed of improvement.

The POS represents the most senior professionals and managers of planning functions in the English Local Authorities. In 2007/08 the Society's efforts are to build upon the progress made to date and to cement the role of POS as a positive force for planning.

RPS
